What is Cinco De Mayo: The reason behind its celebration

Cinco de mayo is a very popular celebration day held on 5th May of every year. On the day of May 5 of the year 1862, the Mexican Army got victory over the French army in the battle of Puebla. So, People of USA and Mexico enjoy day as big festival as a remembrance.

The most interesting fact is the people of the United States celebrate it on a large scale than Mexican. At the time of 1861, Mexico was in a financial problem because of internal conflicts. Benito Juárez was elected as president of Mexico at that time. Mexico had to pay debt payment to European countries.

To get back payments, Britain, France, and Spain sent their navy forces to Veracruz, leading city of Mexico. However, Britain and Spain withdrew their forces by reconciliation with Mexico. But, the French government decided to attack in order to rule over Mexico.

With a well-armed large force of troops, the French empire attacked first on Veracruz and forced to retreat the Mexican government. After a short victory, French empire sent out nearly 6,000 troops to attack Puebla(City of Mexico) under control of general Charles Latrille de Lorencez.

To give them tough competition, Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza prepared an army to defend. After losing 500 soldiers, French retreated back and Mexico won the battle. The same year, the United States provided military support to Mexico after the end of civil war.
