Jack O’ Lantern History

When we take a look down the history it seems that this practice actually originated from an Irish myth about a man named “Stingy Jack”. Actually, he invited the devil to have a drink with him but was not willing to pay for his drink so he convinced the devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to do future payments of the drink.

The devil did so, then Jack decided to keep the money and put into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented it from changing into its original form. Then Jack put a condition for the Devil to be freed that he would not bother him for the trick he did and he would not claim his soul after he dies.

But after some months, Jack again tricked the Devil for climbing onto a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was on the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that Devil could not come down until he promised not to bother for ten more years.

After years when Jack died, Devil could not claim his soul as he had given him the word. So he sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way, and since he put the coal into a carved-out turnip he has been roaming around the Earth. This began to be referred to Jack of the lantern or Jack O’ Lantern.
